Sean McGrath excelled as Rockland’s U-12 team defeated Rangers 4-8 to 2-2 in New York Minor Board action Sunday in Rockland.
McGrath and Rangers’ Sean Twomey gave sterling examples of leadership and excellent footballing ability. Rockland keeper Kevin Sweeney had two breathtaking saves to help inspire his team at the early stages. Rockland were also best served by Mike Prendergast, who scored twice, Patrick Troy and Tara Charlton. Outstanding for the Rangers were Ronan McGoldrick, Brendan Cullinan, Pierce Cassels and Colm Flynn.
The under-14 game, as expected, was full of flowing football and some well-taken scores. The host team won 6-6 to 2-2. Rockland moved the ball around fluently, and it was evident through their play that they had a good few training sessions under their belts this early in the season. Rangers, although a younger team on average, played well and also displayed keen footballing talent. Their finest players were Lorcan Malone, Pat O’Driscoll, Peter Woods and Kevin Cullinan. Rockland’s foremost were Michael O’Sullivan, Caleb Chaing, Stephen Spellman and Danny O’Malley. Players of the Match were, Brendan McManus (Rockland), and Mike Wiezorek (Rangers).
Rockland emerged winners in the U-10 game. Stars for Rockland were Jamie Boyle, Patrick Keane, T.J. McPike and Brendan Lee. Rangers’ stars were:Kevin Daly, Keegan Tulty, Paul Mulligan and keeper Fergal Gormally. The Players of the Match were Tom McNamara (Rockland) and Brian Twomey (Rangers).
On Saturday in Fairlawn, N.J., the St. Joseph’s U-10 team edged St. Raymond’s 1-3 to 1-2. Players of the Match were Francis McKenna (St. Joseph’s), and Sean Slattery (St. Raymond’s).
In U-12, it was St. Joseph’s 1-5, St. Raymonds 2-6. Players of the Match, Colleen Hickey (St. Joseph’s), Michael Slattery (St. Raymond’s).
