Monaghan hold out against Rockland

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

On Sunday, Paddy’s field was the host to the Louie O’ Hehir Shield

final between Monaghan and Rockland. Rockland had previously held this title in 1996, but were beaten by Ciarrai in the 1997 and 1998 finals, so they were very anxious to have this title back in their hands.

The pace of play was very quick and even with both teams looking very determined. Rockland, unable to field a full team, had to make due with 13 players.

Monaghan capitalized early on Rockland’s lack of offense, and their backs kept sending good clearances to forward line. Monaghan’s forwards Chris Gallagher and Catherine Donohue enjoyed some comfortable possession, which resulted in Monaghan stretching their

lead early over Rockland.

Mags Dineen and Kerri Ann Galvin did their best to notch up scores for Rockland but at the half it stood at Rockland 0-4 to Monaghan 2-3.

Rockland returned in the second half with a bit more vigor and tried hard to make up for the lack of manpower. Each Rockland player seemed to double their efforts to make up for being two players short.

Colleen McElroy and Mags Dineen got 2 goals in the early minutes of the second half to put them ahead for the first time in the game. They further increased their lead when Colleen McElroy won the ball in front of the goals, got around the full back and put the ball in the back of the net, much to Monaghan’s

horror.

Their lead diminished, Monaghan, who seemed to have lost their stride in the early part of the second half, got back into the game.

With some great encouragement from the side, Monaghan got things going. They moved the ball up to their forwards, each of which had no problem finding target.

Goals by Maudy Lynn and Mary Stafford stretched their lead comfortably.

Rockland, who were starting to wear, particularly in the back line, put up a wonderful fight for a team left a little short-handed on the

day.

When the referee blew the final whistle the Monaghan camp had maintained a four point lead over Rockland to give them the victory.

For the winners it was a good all round team effort with excellent play from Catherine Flood, Noreen Reilly, Trina Wall, Norma McCarthy, Chris Gallagher, Maudy Lynn and Catherine

Donohoe.

For Rockland best were Cathy Dunleavy, Joanna Hoenninger,

Mags Dineen, Ann Marie Maye and Kerry Ann Galvin.
