Cork continued their current well-being and took another step toward senior football playoff qualification with a comfortable Div. 1 victory over western rivals Roscommon Sunday at Gaelic Park.

In an uninspiring hour, they had things pretty much their own way, and only their performance in front of the goal, especially in the early stages of the game, kept the action competitive. Sporting the nucleus of the team that almost made the final only two years ago, Liam Bermingham and Co. will have their sights focused on another such opportunity as they approach their crucial mid-season stage.

Early Cork scores from Sean O’Flynn, Pat Mahoney and Steve Quinn opened a gap, but Roscommon did respond and with Donie Farrell upended in the penalty area, they were awarded a spot kick. Richie Maher sent the ball over the bar with a major score really needed by his side. Nevertheless, his side duly restored the parity and as both traded points a late Cork surge was enough to secure the interval advantage, 0-8 to 0-6.

The second half didn’t prove to be as close. Eric Dockery increased the lead and 5 consecutive points from Gerry O’Riordan had the rebels firmly in control. With Roscommon only able to add two points to their tally, they quickly fell out of contention and it was plain sailing for the Corkmen to chalk up their first victory.
