N.Y. GAA Preview Cavan, Leitrim ladies in Kearney Cup Final

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

The ladies of Cavan and Leitrim will clash this Sunday in the much-awaited Anne Kearney Cup Final, with the throw-in at 3:30 p.m.

It is a game not to be missed, a repeat of last year’s final.

Leitrim are the current title holders after a thrilling final last year when they took the title by the narrowest of margins. Leitrim defeated Na Fianna in the semi-final and, on this Sunday, Captain Kathleen Hickey will no doubt hope that she will be lifting the silverware.

Leitrim gained valuable players through transfers in Denise Maher, Ann Holland, Mags Dineen and Joanne Hoenninger. These, in addition to the experience of Collette McElligot, AnnMarie McMunn, Pat Meade and Eibhlish Dineen, among others, make up a fine panel.

Cavan, on the other hand, are looking as strong as ever and remain unbeaten in this year’s season. Their semi-final was against Mayo.

Cavan are no strangers to Gaelic Park or finals and manager Phil Sheridan will have his squad well fired up for this final, expecting nothing less that 100 percent from his panel. With the skills of Olive Wilson, Olive Lynch, Pauline Coleman, Louise Fox, Gillian Bennett, Rosie O’Reilly, Karen Shalvey and Catherine McAteer among others, he can be sure he will get it.
