N.Y. GAA Previews Waterford, Offaly hurlers to do battle

Here are previews of this Sunday’s New York GAA games at Gaelic Park in the Bronx:

Junior Football A

Donegal vs. Down

1 p.m.

I’m going to have to plump for Donegal in this one. They’ve been playing reasonably well in this division so far this year, and, having beaten Fermanagh by a healthy scoreline three weeks back, should prevail in this one. Down were beaten by the same Fermanagh side two weeks ago at Gaelic Park, and though Donegal had the services of a number of key senior players in their ranks on that occasion, they were still far too strong for their fellow Ulster rivals. Expect to see a number of old pro’s in the Donegal side, with Chief Molloy and Leslie McGettigan possibly lining up for their county.

Senior Hurling

Waterford vs. Offaly

2:30 p.m.

The outcome of the senior hurling matches have proved to be rather difficult to predict this season, what with so many good sides involved in the championship race. Sean Guinan’s Offaly side snatched a draw with Clare a few weeks back when at times their hopes of garnering anything from the tie looked dead and buried. Waterford, though, are no pushovers and I expect a tightly fought contest here, with the lads from Waterford coming back from their recent defeat to the Kilkenny Cats to overcome the threat of Offaly.

S.F. Div. 1

Monaghan vs. Westmeath

4 p.m.

Seamus Dooley’s Monaghan side have looked good so far this season, having romped to victory in their first game of the season. Westmeath were recently beaten by Donegal by a four-point margin, and will obviously hope to up their game a little to try to deny the likes of Eddie Murphy up front for Monaghan. I figure Monaghan’s scoring prowess may be a little too much for Westmeath and they will take the two points home with them.

Senior Football

Leitrim vs. Tyrone

5:15 p.m.

Frank Brady makes a welcome return to Gaelic Park after his adventures with the New York side in Ireland, though his Leitrim side have not been performing to the best of their capabilities this year. Having drawn against Stamford and lost to Cavan, things do not look good for the Leitrim men. Depending on the way the teams line up, there could be an interesting battle between Tyrone forward Michael Slowey and Leitrim back Neville Dunne, both of whom acquitted themselves very well in Castlebar last week. I’ll go for Slowey’s side to grab the win here.
