N.Y. GAA Tipperary hurlers outduel Cork

Tipperary 0-13, Cork 1-9

A rather controversial tie here resulted in a junior hurling win for the Tipp men, when Cork had considered themselves at least on line for a draw. The game was even-sided throughout, with neither side willing or able to garner full control over their opponents.

Cork, having played senior hurling until this season, will be hugely disappointed at losing out on a point after having led the Tipp lads at various stages during the game. Tipp, on the other hand, will be ecstatic at having picked up another two points having gained a victory last week in Van Cortlandt over their rivals from New Jersey. The game opened as the skies closed, and for the first time at the park during the afternoon we had no rain, though the pitch, it has to be said, made things a little difficult for the players to really involve themselves in much flowing hurling.

Cork started the game on top with a well-executed goal from Aidan O’Connor, who was to go on to have an outstanding game for the Rebels. Tipperary fought back, thanks to points from Paul Casey, who almost matched O’Connor in terms of scoring. The sides matched each other throughout much of the first half, though Cork held the lead for short periods, Tipperary hit back thanks to points from Stephen Carty, Casey and Eamonn Faulkner. Cork’s Mick Taylor nabbed a couple for his side for the two teams to go in to the interval all square at 1-5 to eight points.

Cork opened the second half on a stronger footing than their rivals and cruised into a two-point lead thanks to efforts from O’Connor and Taylor, though Casey and Paul Hogan hit points back for Tipp to return the tie to an even keel. Cork brought Joe Grace onto the field of play to add a little flair and fresh legs to the fold, and he struck up with O’Connor to provide him with another point for Cork.

Shane Ryan and his namesake Eamonn scored final points for Tipperary to edge their side in front at the final whistle by the narrowest of margins, and due to the unsuitable weather conditions, the electronic scoreboard was not in use throughout the day’s games, causing some predictable overboiling of emotions on various benches during the day. Cork must put this disappointment behind them. I’m sure they will pick themselves up though, as remember many of these players are used to playing senior hurling so they will hope to be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.
