On Saturday afternoon at Paddy’s Field in glorious weather before a large enthusiastic crowd Rangers an Celtics got the 1999 Minor Board season off to a great start.
The Under-10 game had Rangers picking up where they left off last season, beating Celtic. Brian Cullinane, Sean Twomey, Denis McGoldrick, Michael Anderson excelled for the winners. Allison Traynor, Shane O’Connor, P.J. Molloy, Charlie McGovern, Allison Smith excelled for Celtics.
In the Under-12 contest Rangers beat Celtics, 1-5 to 0-4. Kevin O’Driscoll, Stephen and Chris Cassells, Lorcan Malone, Peter Woods,were outstanding. Catching the eye for Celtics, Ciara McArdle, Conor McKeon, Doug Sheeran and goalkeeper Kate Hockman.
In an exciting Under-16 championship game, Rangers made it the third win of the day over Celtics, 5-4 to 2-9. Peter Cassels, Gary Cullinane, Sean McDonagh, Ronan and Kevin Coughlan were razor sharp for Rangers. Celtics got great displays from Kevin O’Meara, Jamie Lally, John McArdle, Mike McDonagh and Ed Sheeran. Pat Ryan excelled as referee.
In Rockland, Rockland started their season on a winning note winning all three games over St. Joseph’s. In the Under-10 game Dylan Maye, Emmett McGrade, Conor Whelan and Michael Dunne were impressive for Rockland. St. Josephs best were Colleen Gilly, Daniel Cahillane and Billy Brennan Final score: Rockland 3-0, St. Josephs 0-3.
In the Under-12 championship, ity was Rockland 3-4 St. Josephs 1-2. Steve Spellman, Matt Pogeweit, Brendan McManus, Nick Mangan and Conor Hogan gave great performances for the winners. The Ruane brothers and Jack Power were best for St. Joseph’s.

An exciting Under-16 contest had the home side edge St. Joseph’s by 5-10 to 4-9. For the winners, James Donahue, Greg Loftus, Jeff Gartner, Sean Moughty, Shane Hogan and Sean Dunne were outstanding, while Michael Creegan, P.J. Ferris, Chris Lambe and Noel Rooney were impressive for St. Joseph’s.
On Sunday morning at Rockland, St. Joseph’s, using the long ball effectively had a convincing win over Rockland, 2-8 to 2-5, in the Under-18 game. Chris Dello, Jerry Gillespie, Peter Miller, Michael Creegan, Rory O’Neill, Ian Young and John Cassels had a marvelous hour’s football. Rockland’s best were Paul Brewer, Ray Lennon, Jeff Gartner, Declan Neville, Sean Murphy and Chris Mangan. Dan Kiely was referee.
