New York 2-6, London 1-6

In one of the most remarkable International Minor tournament shield finals played in Cooley, Co. Louth, New York rallied from a 1-6 to 0-3 deficit in extra time at the weekend.

Earlier in the week, the teams had played to an 0-6 draw.

Midway in the second half, Eamon Deane brought in Andrew Donoghue, the youngest player on the panel, to corner back. He shut down London’s most dangerous forward, Wayne O’Sullivan. New York took the game to their rivals with 10 minutes to go. First Darren Meaney rattled the net after some great outfield play by Gerry Gillespie and Gerry Cullinan. Terrence Flynn got the second to even the score. Niall Duggan and Gerry Gillespie got the winners in extra time.

In other games, New York beat highly regarded Lancashire 2-4 to 1-5 behind the good play of Niall Duggan, Declan Gourley, Brian Morris, Kevin Coughlin, Michael Devine, Jamie Lally, Sean Moyles, Adrian Clarke, Pat Maguire, Terrence Flynn, Gary Cullinan, Gerry Gillespie, Billy Donoghue, Darren Meaney, Derek Courtney, Ciaran Moyles, Glen McDermott, Dave Hannon, Johnny Keenan, Andrew Donoghue and Hugo Rooney, but lost to Scotland 3-1 to 1-6, before beating Hertfordshire 1-6 to 2-1 and Yorkshire 3-4 to 0-2.
