NACB Roundup: National Board crowns champions

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

In perhaps the biggest Irish sports spectacle ever held outside of Ireland, 55 teams representing 13 cities contested 47 games over the Labor Day weekend in the North American County Board Finals, held in Washington, D.C.

Seven cities shared the spoils and history was created when two cities, Washington, D.C., and San Jose brought home national titles for the first time. In addition, five clubs gained their first American Board championship.

The curtain came down on this great event with the awards banquet held at the downtown Washington Hyatt Hotel. Highlight of the evening was the electrifying speech by the president of the GAA, Joe McDonough, who traveled from Ireland to attend the finals for the third consecutive year. Also in attendance from Ireland were Helen O’Rourke, national secretary of Ladies Gaelic Football and Ita Flatley, senior vice-president of Ladies Gaelic Football. Top all-Ireland referees, Wexfordmen Dickie Murphy and Brian White, were on hand to take charge of all senior games over the long weekend. Next year’s playoffs are scheduled for Chicago.
