It’s been almost two weeks since we ran a George Clooney item, which is surely a violation of some global gossip statute or another. So we’ll tell you that Gorgeous George is planning to play a CIA agent in the upcoming film “Syriana.” The movie is based on the true story of former CIA anti-terror operative Robert Bauer.

The Ego may have landed Down Under, but it’s apparently hit a bit of turbulence on the way. Superstar Robbie Williams is reportedly ticked off that his support act – 80s pop icons Duran Duran – have been getting the lion’s share of media attention on the Australian leg of his world tour. Some newspapers have billed the show as “Duran Duran with Robbie Williams” and fan reaction to the Duranies has been “overwhelming [and thrilling,” according to DD drummer John Taylor. “It just doesn’t feel like 20 years has passed,” he told an Aussie newspaper. Robbie, we assume, feels differently.

Keith Richards can’t get no satisfaction at the moment. The Rolling Stones wild man has slammed band mate Mick Jagger for “selling out” in accepting a knighthood, but his pal says he’s just jealous. “It’s like being given an ice cream,” said the newly created Sir Mick. “Get one and they all want one.”

Mel Gibson got an early Christmas present this week, in the form of a Vatican “seal of approval” for his controversial film, “The Passion of Christ.” The film was screened for a high-ranking group of Vatican officials, who praised its “exquisite artistic and religious sensitivity.” The film is scheduled to open early in 2004.

Echo colleague Brian Aherne, this next item is for you: “Dawson’s Creek” cutie Katie Holmes has been signed to play the Caped Crusader’s girlfriend in the next “Batman” movie. She’ll star opposite Irish actor Cillian Murphy, who mesmerized audiences in his last film, “28 Days Later.”

Congratulations are in order for Elvis Costello and Diana Krall. The singers tied the knot in a hush-hush wedding ceremony held at Elton John’s manison outisde London last weekend. Elvis has two previous marriages under his belt – the last one to former Pogues band mamber Cait O’Riordan.

Irish pop princess Samantha Mumba will be rocking around the Christmas tree with a new beau this year. The singer, who split with longtime boyfriend Mark Henderson a few weeks ago, is dating American R&B singer Brian “Brasco” Dinero of the group Jagged Edge, according to Ireland’s Sunday World newspaper. No one in Sam’s camp will confirm or deny the rumors. Manager Louis Walsh snapped, “I don’t like talking about her personal life.”

Apparently, everyone loves Jim Sheridan’s new movie, “In America.” The Sunday World reports that at a recent screening of the touching family drama, Westlife singer Kian Egan and his date, Jodi Albert, astonished cinemagoers by “snogging” throughout the entire movie.

If you want break into acting, get a job as a pop singer. Following in the footsteps of Sam Mumba, Keith Duffy, Martine McCutcheon, Ronan Keating, etc. is Tyrone man Liam McKenna, currently a member of the pop band Six. Liam has landed a role – “it’s really a small part,” he says modestly – in “Collateral,” wich also stars Jamie Foxx and Jada Pinkett Smith. The highlight for McKenna? “I got to say ‘Hello’ to Penelope Cruz,” he said.
