New and Noteworthy: Peers pressure Bono

O.K., that last part might be a little confusing. But it’s also true, as this week’s rock star quote roundup will demonstrate. The subject is Bono, aka Paul Hewson, aka U2 front man, a.k.a. global anti-poverty activist. It seems that some of his fellow music makers are more than a bit uncomfortable with the singer’s political bedfellows.
Newly un-retired performer Sinead O’Connor, herself no stranger to political activism, told entertainment web site www.iol.ie that she’s a bit pickier than her pal Bono when it comes to accepting dinner invitations.
“I think you risk losing your credibility by going to a party at Downing Street,” she sniffed. “I would draw a line at drinking and eating cheese with the Prime Minister.” No word on whether Tony Blair would draw the line at scarfing sandwiches with a Tridentine priest who’s also a mother of three.
Singer Billy Bragg warned that the Irish superstar was “put[ing] his credibility on the line” by having the odd chin-wag with American president George Bush. But band mate (and old pal) The Edge seemed to give Bono’s efforts his blessing.
“I think he’s doing a fantastic job,” said the legendary guitarist. “But I do not have the time. I am too busy in the studio recording.”
