The County Cork girl will have to undergo yet another surgery this Friday at Sloan Kettering in New York. Grace, just two, is suffering from Stage Four Neuroblastoma, the most serious form of this particular cancer.
Doctors are, however, optimistic that the latest surgery will be a success.
Grace and her parents were traveling to Toronto where Grace’s mom Millie, a medical doctor, recently secured a new hospital post.
When they stopped in Rochester, Millie and Grace’s father Kevin noticed that Grace was limping. Not wanting to take any chances Millie flew back to New York with Grace and Kevin continued to Toronto as their other daughter, Alice, was starting school.
Grace’s battle against cancer was given a big boost earlier this year when a fundraiser organized by the County Cork Association in the city raised $45,000 to help meet her enormous medical costs.
This and other fundraising have raised $80,000 to date, according to Mae O’Driscoll of the Cork Association.
“And the fund is still receiving donations. The surgeon has to be paid up front. We are happy we have the money to pay him and Sloan,” she said.
Grace parents are from Passage West, County Cork. Grace’s treatment will ultimately cost an estimated $800,000. All of the family’s savings, plus money borrowed, has gone to Grace’s treatment.
