New consulate for southwest

February 17, 2011

Speaking in Philadelphia ahead of the publication of his embassy’s strategic review of Irish-U.S. relations, Irish ambassador to Washington, Michael Collins, indicated that a new consulate for the southwest was on the cards.
He said that while the U.S. had changed dramatically over the past 80 years, the four Irish consular facilities had remained in the same cities, New York, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco.
Accepting that there was a gap in the southwest, where many Irish companies are now based, Collins said a new consulate was likely to be a key recommendation of the strategic review.
Collins made his remarks in an address to the annual awards luncheon of the Irish American Business Chamber and Network in Philadelphia last Friday.
Meanwhile, the Harp and Shamrock Society Of Texas, based in San Antonio, has announced that Roisin Mulligan from Dallas, the 2008 Texas Rose of Tralee, will be the grand marshal for the city’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 14. The society’s Irishman of the Year is George Tracey. Details at www.harpandshamrock.org.
