In the middle of a shopping spree in her native Dublin on Saturday, the millionaire singer was stopped and falsely accused of shoplifting at the Boots Chemists store in bustling Henry Street.
According to the Sunday World, the singer was the target of a practical joke gone horribly pear-shaped. A doorman in a neighboring store spotted the gorgeous singer and her pal leaving his shop and heading toward Boots.
“For a joke, he radioed his pal who was working nearby in Boots,” a source told the paper.
“[He told him] there was a good-looking black girl headed his way and she was a suspected shoplifter. He thought his friend would spot Samantha and get the joke.”
Unfortunately, the guard in the second store was not quite up to speed on his MTV.
“He didn’t know who she was,” said the insider.
“When she went into Boots, he stopped her and wrongly accused her of shoplifting.”
As hundreds of astonished onlookers gaped, a mortified Sam was questioned by security personnel. The matter was resolved quickly, but the angry singer is said to be mulling a lawsuit.
“It was obviously very upsetting,” said a source close to the singer. “It may have been a joke between the doormen, but Samantha hadn’t a clue what was going on.”
Boots Chemists has been quick to point out that the security personnel involved were not their own staff. The store has a contract with a firm that provides security guards.
The singer’s pal continued, “The fact that the whole thing was cleared up quickly was one thing, but it’s still an appalling experience, particularly for someone in Samantha’s position.”
In more Mumba news, the 19-year-old singer has been appointed as a special representative for UNICEF Ireland. She’s thrilled at the opportunity to make difference in the lives of children in poor countries.
“I didn’t think I would be somebody they would go for but they did so I absolutely jumped at the opportunity and I think it’s wonderful,” she said.
In even more Samantha news, if you happen to bump into her on the street, be sure to ask her what time it is. Sam has signed on as a model for the Dior Watch Collection (she will carry the title of Dior ambassador) and will get to take her choice of baubles from the high-end collection. Just in case you’re wondering, this ain’t Swatch- – these babies start at $3,000. Which, for Samantha, should give new meaning to the term “free time.”
