There were tears mixed in with the cheers at Madison Square Garden last Saturday night as U2 worked their magic for a battered but unbowed New York audience. Reflecting the tenor of the times, the two-and-a-half-hour show ran through the gamut of emotions, juxtaposing spiritual songs with defiant anthems, and sensitivity with swaggering bravado.
