In a study of 188 cities across the US, New York was at the bottom of the pile when it came to salary values, according to a report by Salary.com.
Salaries in New York City are actually 17 percent higher than the national average, but that is offset by a cost of living that is 94 percent higher, making New York officially the hardest place for workers get their bank accounts into the black.
Results were obtained by calculating median salaries across 2,500 job sectors, taking into account housing costs, living costs, unemployment and job growth figures in each city.
Based on this criteria, the survey found that New York workers earn proportionately less than any other city in the U.S.
Other low salary cities included Stamford, CT, San Jose, CA and San Diego, CA. New London, CT, topped the list for salary value, followed by Huntsville AL, Baltimore, MD, Harrisburg, PA and Tulsa, OK.
