Leitrim 3-12, Cavan 0-7 It was another resounding success for Leitrim as their unbeaten in Div. I football run continues and a welcome victory in their bid to retain the title, but for at least half an hour of this encounter the game was very much in the balance.

Contrary to what the final scoreline suggests only, one point separated the sides at the interval on several occasions the woodwork would come to Leitrim’s rescue as a spirited Cavan side had the champions very much on the defensive. But these missed opportunities by the Breffni men would cost them dearly with a much fitter Leitrim side able to assert themselves in the second half.

With it anybody’s game at half-time, Leitrim responded to the threat and a concerted effort in the early stages of the second half registered 1-6 without reply, Sean Jones grabbing the goal. Cavan did try to respond but earlier squandered opportunities didn’t help their cause and as the hour progressed they did become more vulnerable, a weakness which Leitrim duly exploited.

Mike Brosnan, MJ Hennessy, John Meehan, John and Jim Donahue and Sean Jones had a fine hour for Leitrim with Mick Reilly, Barry Annette, Barney Brady, Jim Gilsenan, Kevin Dowd and Andy McEvoy trying hard for Cavan.

Leitrim scorers: S. Jones 2-1, MJ Hennessy 1-1, D. Phelan 0-3, Jim Donahue 0-2, John Donahue 0-2, N. Dunne, M. Brosna and J. Meehan all 0-1.
