Newcomers Fallen, Thornton propel Gaels to victory

February 16, 2011

Astoria’s dangerous corner forward, Nestor Allen, opened the scoring with back-to-back points, first from a free and then from play. After midfielder Fallon pointed, he turned set up man. Fallon’s free from 50 yards dropped in around the square and Thornton, a professional boxer recently relocated from Boston, got a fist to it for the Astoria 3-pointer. Thornton and Derek McKenna each added a point for the Gaels before Down finally erased the goose egg from their side of the scoreboard.
Full forward Ciaran Ferran was the scorer with a point and he no sooner had one before he added a second. The big full forward proved a handful and if he were better served the score might well have been closer.
Two players got red cards in each half from referee Tom Darby with Astoria’s Bernard Treanor and Down’s Noel Magee going for fighting just before halftime.
Astoria were up 1-6 to 0-2 at the break and despite Down’s best efforts they never looked like relinquishing that advantage. Ferron added three more points in the second half but Astoria kept them at bay, outscoring the Ulster side 0-5 to 0-4 over the final 30 minutes.
