The fundraiser, at the famed unit’s armory on Lexington Avenue in Manhattan, was organized by the Cardinal Tom_s O Fiaich Ancient Order of Hibernians Div. 7 and the Prudential Financial.
It was attended by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. George Pataki who urged New Yorkers to give the 69th its greatest ever ovation when it leads the New York St. Patrick’s Day parade up fifth Avenue.
While most of the 69th is in Iraq, its rear guard and members of the 69th Veterans Corps will lead the parade.
The highlight of the armory event, which kicked of a week of fundraising for 69th families, was the presentation of AOH Meritorious Service Awards to the families of 15 members serving with the 69th who have been killed in action in Iraq, and also a number of members who have been recently wounded.
Terrence Tierney of Div. 7 said that the net fundraising figure was still being tallied but would probably exceed $100,000. Donations were still be accepted at www.69threception.org or by calling (914) 524-0046.
Meanwhile, Westchester County’s Board of Legislators has proclaimed March 17 “Fighting 69th Day” in the county.
