Nominations are ‘Gang’-ing up

Which might not be the most flattering analogy, but then, the movie is really, really dark and violent and the clothes are hideous and Leo DiCaprio, in particular, looks like he could star in “One A-Lister in Search of a Stylist” and don’t even get us started about Daniel Day Lewis and those checkered pants . . .
[Deep breath.]
Anyway, the Scorsese flick, which won a Golden Globe last week for “Best Director,” and is considered an Oscar front-runner, has garnered a cool dozen nods from the Orange British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA). With its 12 nominations, “Gangs” is tied for first place with the absolutely flawless film adapation of the Broadway musical “Chicago.” The two films are followed by the Meryl Streep-Julianne Moore-Nicole Kidman tour de force “The Hours” (11 nominations) and “Lord of the Rings” (nine nods).
The BAFTAS will be held on Feb. 23, a full month before the Oscars. Which should give Daniel Day Lewis — nominated for Best Actor — enough time to scribble down his acceptance speech. Assuming, of course, that he can tear himself away from his duties as an apprentice cobbler. (Note to DDL: how are you at replacing heel taps? We might have a job for you . . .)
