NYGAA: Points, goals make for Tipp win

February 17, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Tipperary started well and had three points in as many mintues from Marlin Finn, Trevor Fletcher and Kevin Kennedy. Then Roy Henley lashed a ball to the net after Paul Murray was fouled. At this stage Tipp looked much the sharper team and they continued to fire over points frequently and fluently. Tipp looked like moving well ahead, but Henley kept pulling them back with his scores.
A sequence of points from Terry Delaney, David Loughnane, and Trevor Fletcher put Tipp ahead by seven points with five minutes left in the half. Then began a Waterford resurgence, as Paddy Whalen and Henley landed four quick points to narrow the gap. However as Waterford were gaining confidence and momentum Tipp came right back with points from Fletcher and a goal from Kennedy to leave the score at 1-14 to 1-7 in Tipp’s favor at the break.
Quick points became the order of the day as Kennedy and Henley exchanged points at the restart. More points followed from Finn and Fletcher while Henley sandwiched in another. Then as Tipp threatened to pull away Henley rattled the twines with his second goal after Cian O’Connor was fouled. But the Waterford excitement was quickly doused as Fletcher and Tierney added three points to leave the scoreline at 1-20 to 2-9 midway through the second half.
However, Waterford refused to fold as Ray Duggan and Henley tapped over points. Then Waterford’s hopes were raised when Henley struck for his third goal after an inspiring run by Tommy Cooper to leave just four points between the sides with five minutes left.
However, that was as close as Waterford would get, as the busy Fletcher robbed Aidan Sweeney as he attempted to clear his lines. Fletcher’s goal sealed the door on Waterford’s comeback and closed out the scoring on a very entertaining game, especially the second half. For Tipp, this was a very solid team performance, illustrated by the fact that seven players were on the scoring sheet. Waterford, by contrast, had three players scoring with 3-8 from the stick of Henley.
