LIMERICK HURLERS FOLD
In the middle of what turned out to be a fine week for the New York footballers, New York hurling received a body blow with the news that the Limerick hurling club has folded. With four of their five New York Senior Hurling Championships having come since 1994, last year’s beaten finalists have been a major force in New York hurling for more than a decade.
With titles in 1994, ’95, ’98, and 2001, the Green and White of Limerick could never be overlooked when championships were being predicted.
However, they were not immune to the increasingly familiar lament of their not being enough players. With players like Vinny Norton and Mike Barron returning to Ireland and Tadgh O’Callaghan journeying to Australia, the Treaty County surrendered to the inevitable.
The makeup of the New York Senior Hurling championship is now somewhat murky, although it should be defending champs Connecticut State, Tipperary, Offaly, Clare, Kilkenny, New Jersey, Westmeath, and Galway pending further fold-ups or amalgamations.
