Obama hails another Murphy

February 17, 2011

Murphy will join three others of the same surname in the House of Representatives: they are Christopher S. Murphy of Connecticut and two Pennsylvanian congressmen, Iraq war veteran Patrick Murphy of Bucks County in suburban Philadelphia and Tim Murphy of Pittsburgh, the only Republican of the quartet.
The 39-year-old businessman and Harvard graduate Murphy defeated Republican Jim Tedisco, who until recently was minority leader of the New York State Assembly.
There was little separating them on March 31 after the initial count of more than 150,000 votes. Tedisco, however, conceded last Friday when Murphy took a 400-vote lead.
President Obama said: “As a candidate, Scott courageously championed the economic plans we need to lift our nation and put it on a better path, and he will continue to do so in Congress. With his proven record of creating high paying jobs and standing up for Upstate New York, Scott will bring to the nation’s capitol the change New Yorkers need.”
Speaker Pelosi said: “Scott’s victory is a clear indication that Democrats, Independents and Republicans across the country want to continue moving America in a New Direction and reject the ‘just say no’ policies of Washington, D.C. Republicans.
“As a high-tech entrepreneur and business leader, Congressman-elect Murphy will bring a wealth of experience to the House,” Pelosi added.
Rep. Chris Van Hollen, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said: “Scott Murphy’s victory in this district where Republicans outnumber Democrats by more than 70,000 represents a rejection of the obstructionist agenda and scare tactics that have become the hallmark of House Republicans,”
The special election was called after Gov. David Paterson selected Gillibrand in January to fill Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat.
The 20th comprises Columbia, Greene, Warren and Washington counties and parts of Delaware, Dutchess, Essex, Otsego, Rensselaer and Saratoga counties.
Murphy is married to Jennifer Hogan. They have three children.
