O’Connell paces Corkto U21 hurling title

Cork 2-15, Galway 2-10

DUBLIN — Cork made no mistake in claiming a second All-Ireland Under 21 hurling title in succession when they were far too sharp for Galway at Thurles last Sunday.

In truth, this contest was over long before a late burst of scoring that saw Galway pinch two goals in the final three minutes.

The Cork superiority was evident from the start. First they contained Galway’s attack and then quickly pushed ahead. Midway through the half, they had built up a 4-point lead and from then on there was never any doubt that team captain Donal Murphy was destined to lift the cup just as he had 12 months previously.

Mick O’Connell turned in a man-of-the-match display with 7 points, while there were valuable contributions from senior players Joe Deane, Diarmuid O’Sullivan and Sean O hAilpin. Both goals came courtesy of Brian O’Keeffe and Cork could afford to have an O’Sullivan penalty saved and still cruise home.
