Off the Field Cavan dance on Dec. 5

Peter Hennessy, a long-standing active member of the Cavan Football Club, will be the honoree at the 30th annual Cavan dinner dance, to be held on Dec. 5 in the Astoria Manor.

Hennessy has been an officer of the Cavan club for almost two decades and has held the positions of Junior A and Junior B manager, along with acting as a selector for the senior team. He was the chief organizer of the popular Friday night card drives in the 1980s.

A native of Mountnugent, he emigrated in 1973, spending time in Alaska, Canada, Chicago and Philadelphia before settling in New York in 1982. He lives in Woodlawn and is employed by the Break to the Border cab company.

GAA Christmas party

The New York GAA will hold a Christmas party for all GAA members, umpires, referees and linesmen on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 5 p.m. at the Lansdowne Bar, 6159 Broadway, at 251st Street, in the Bronx. The party follows the election of 1999 officers and the meeting to discuss reviving the Galway Football Club.

Bronx soccer dinner dance

The women of the Bronx Irish Soccer League will hold their 9th annual dinner dance will be held on Saturday, Dec. 12, at Yonkers Raceway. Cocktails are at 8 p.m. Music will be by Homeward Bound. Astoria Gaels Christmas Party

Waterford Hurling Club will hold a Christmas party on Sunday, Dec. 19, in The Jolly Tinker Bar, Webster Avenue and Bedford Park, in the Bronx. Soccer on ESPN 2

World Wide Soccer may be seen on ESPN 2 every Monday at 2:30 p.m. hosted by Rob Stone, who presents stories and highlights from around the world. Stone pays particular attention to MLS action and men and women’s soccer in the U.S. college scene.

The show also features Tommy Smyth’s analysis of important games.

Minor Board annual banquet

The GAA Minor Board’s 29th Annual Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday evening, Jan. 23, at the Polish Center, 92 Waverly St., Yonkers. Guests of honor on this festive occasion will be two of New York’s most dedicated Gaels, Pete Jones ( St. Joseph’s F.C.) and Rita Concannon (Rangers F.C). The coveted James O’Sullivan Award will be presented. All 1998 divisional champions, players of the year, 1998 All Stars, scholarship winners will be honored. The MC for the evening is Tommy Smyth of ESPN TV fame. A special souvenir journal will be published.
