Off the Field Gárda Siochána teams for Gaelic Park

Police from New York and Ireland will confront each other in the Big Apple on Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. , but it will all be a case of good Gaelic sportsmanship.

Two Gárda Siochána football teams, a men’s side and a women’s side, will stop off in New York as part of a tour of the United States.

The gárda men’s panel consists of 28 players from all over Ireland while the second team consists of 12 bangárdaí who will play a GAA selection.

The New York police team are members of The Finest Football Club, which is made up of New York City police officers, state troopers and FBI agents. Many are still playing for various junior and senior teams.

The games will be played at Gaelic Park.

Winged Foot Golf Club, in Mamaroneck, N.Y., will host the 25th silver anniversary Iona golf invitational on Oct. 13. The invitational will benefit Iona’s Winged Foot scholarship program and the general scholarship fund.

The invitational was started in 1973 as a means of providing scholarships to the children of Winged Foot Golf Club members and Iona students. Since its inception, the invitational has raised more than two million dollars for scholarships.

The day will begin with breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tee time will be announced from 7:50 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be opportunities to play either the West Course of East Course, space permitting.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be a golf clinic from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., followed by cocktail hour from 6-7 p.m. and dinner from 7-9 p.m.

The cost of the event is $750 per player or a $500 sponsorship per hole. For information, call Patrick Bower at (914) 633-2410.

Barnabas soccer training

The three St. Barnabas soccer teams have resumed training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 p.m. at Evander Child High School on Gun Hill Road. Interested players should call Brian Conway at (914) 237-1570.

Rugby practice

The Forest Hills Men’s Rugby Club will hold open practices until the end of September every Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Flushing Meadow Park at the field next to Jewel Avenue. Current college players and new players welcome. For information, call (212) 435-8727 or http://fhrugby.org.
