Off the Field Longford final aired in U.S.

The Longford county final replay, between Dromard and Abbylara will be broadcast live over the internet this Sunday, Oct. 3, in The Wall, 54-20 Roosevelt Ave., in Woodside, Queens.

Dromard has not been in a county final for more than 50 years and Abbylara has never won a county final.

The broadcast, which will be shown on a large screen, will start at 9:30 a.m. The game itself starts at 10:30 a.m.

Anyone who has internet access may also view the game live by logging onto www.information-providers.ie.

IABS golf

Carey Challenge Cup in East Hampton

The 1999 Gov. Hugh L. Carey Challenge Cup golf tournament will take place Oct. 12 at The Maidstone Club, East Hampton, N.Y. The beneficiary will be the MGA Foundation, a charitable organization. The competition is held in conjunction with the Golfing Union of Ireland and the Metropolitan Golf Association. The tournament, which alternates between the U.S. and Ireland, takes place during two days and is preceded by a corporate "AM-AM" competition pairing each of the 16 players with three amateurs. Events in Canton

The Irish Cultural Center, in Canton, Mass., will, at noon on Oct. 16, celebrate completion of Phase 1 of its new home with a ribbon-cutting, blessing and dedication followed by luncheon.

At 1:30 p.m., the North East Division of the GAA will sponsor a hurling and a football match.

At 5:30 p.m., the McGettigan, Stewart Communications Center will be unveiled to honor two young men from Leitrim and Louth who died last year in a fall from a scaffold in Quincy. The dedication will be performed by the president of the GAA, Joe McDonagh, and Michael O’Connor, director of the Irish Cultural Center.

The Cultural Center will sponsor a reception and celebration banquet for about 1,000 people at 7 p.m. Music will be provided by the Andy Healy Band. Ticket price for the banquet is $50 per person.

On Sunday, Oct. 17, McDonagh will dedicate a new GAA facility at the Irish Cultural Center. Following the dedication, at 1:30 p.m., the Eircell All Star 1998 hurling team will play Cork, the 1999 All-Ireland hurling champions.

At 3 p.m., the two finalists in the All-Ireland football championship, Meath and Cork, will compete in Canton. Admission to the game is $25 per person.

To finish off the evening, the Irish Cultural Center will host an old time marquee dance from 5- 9 p.m. Music by Joe Moriarty and the Irish beat. Admission is free.

Marathon recruiting

The Joints in Motion training team is now recruiting runners and walkers for the Dublin marathon on Oct. 25. Those who sign up will receive 20 weeks of group training, round-trip air fare, hotel accommodations and prizes — all for raising a minimum of $3,600 through sponsor donations.
