Off the Field: Minor Board meetingplanned for Heritage

The next meeting of the GAA minor board will take place on Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. in The Heritage, on McLean Avenue in Yonkers. Henceforth, all meetings will be in The Heritage.

Nomination of officers for 1998 will take place. All candidates for high school and college scholarships must have their names in by this meeting.

Plans for the 29th annual banquet at the Polish Center on Jan. 23, will be on the agenda. Also, the ongoing discussion will take place on how to elevate the board’s games and have intercity games in the near future.

Cavan dinner dance

Peter Hennessy, a long-standing active member of the Cavan Football Club, will be the honoree at the 30th annual Cavan dinner dance, to be held on Dec. 5 in the Astoria Manor.

Hennessy has been an officer of the Cavan club for almost two decades and has held the positions of Junior A and Junior B manager, along with acting as a selector for the senior team. He was the chief organizer of the popular Friday night card drives in the 1980s.

A native of Mountnugent, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1973, spending time in Alaska, Canada, Chicago and Philadelphia before settling in New York in 1982. He lives in Woodlawn and is employed by the Break to the Border cab company.

Bronx soccer dinner dance

The women of the Bronx Irish Soccer League will hold their 9th Annual Dinner Dance will be held on Saturday, Dec. 12, at Yonkers Raceway. Music will be by Homeward Bound. For information, call Trish Gleeson at (914) 376-9814 or Noel Kenny at (914) 693-9866.

Waterford’s Christmas party

Waterford Hurling Club will hold a Christmas party on Dec. 19 in The Jolly Tinker Bar, Webster Avenue and Bedford Park, in the Bronx. World Wide Soccer may be seen on ESPN 2 every Monday at 2:30 p.m. hosted by Rob Stone, who presents stories and highlights from around the world. Stone pays particular attention to MLS action and men and women’s soccer in the U.S. college scene.
