Off the Field: Sligo honor for club president Marren

John Marren, president of the Sligo Football Club of New York, will be the guest of honor at the Sligo Association’s annual St. Patrick’s dinner dance on March 11 at 8 p.m. in Leonard’s of Great Neck.

The Sligo Person of the Year is Raymond Conlon.

Marren is a native of Curry, Co. Sligo and has been involved in the GAA all his life, in Ireland and during his time in London before coming to the U.S. in 1963.

Conlon, a native of Gleann, Co. Sligo, is a long-time member and former president of the Sligo Association.

Kilkenny dance

Kilkenny Hurling Club and the Kilkenny Association of New York will host their annual St. Patrick’s dinner dance on March 11 at Green Tree Country Club in New Rochelle.

The guest of honor will be Dick Lyons and the clubman of the year award will go to Kevin Corbett.

Music will be supplied by Rumor Has It.

Cocktail hour will start at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $65 per person.

Rangers GFC Dance

The Rangers Gaelic Football Club will hold its 28th annual dance on Saturday, March 25, from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at Gaelic Park in the Bronx. Music by Joey Moran.

Guest of Honor is New York GAA President Monty Moloney. Tom Bermingham is Player of the year.

New York GAA Meetings

The New York GAA’s senior football division will meet Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Lansdowne in the Bronx. The junior football division will meet Thursday at 7 p.m., also at the Lansdowne.

Stamford GAA Dance

Stamford Football Club will hold a benefit dance and disco on March 25 in the Temple Bar, Bedford Street, Stamford. This event is a benefit for fire victim Fergus O’Dwyer. Details, call Brenda Costigan at (203) 359-3877.

Limerick Hurling Club

The Limerick Hurling Club of New York will hold its annual dance on Feb. 26 at Rory Dolan’s on McLean Avenue, Yonkers. Music will be provided by John Prunty and the Midlanders. Cocktail hour will begin at 8 p.m.

The guest of honor will be Limerick native and founding club member and player Kieran O’Sullivan. On his arrival in New York in the early 1980s, he played football with Cavan. The hurler of the year award will go to Eamon Shields, from Gort, Co. Galway.

Players needed

The Emeralds FC Soccer Club are looking for

new adult (18+) soccer players: men 18-30 for the First team; men 18-35 for a second team and women for a new team.

Registration will be held on Saturday Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. in The Cottage Pub Near Holy Name Hospital, (formally the "Wig Wam" ) Cedar Lane, Teaneck.

All applicants must be serious players, i.e. have some experience playing the game. Games will be played Sunday mornings in the North Jersey Soccer League.
