Off the Field: Westmeath hurlers call it a day

February 17, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Westmeath haven’t approached those heights since then in either code and now they have become the latest New York club to succumb to the dwindling supply of players. Westmeath may be interested in competing in the Junior division if there is one this year.
Westmeath weren’t alone in their decision to quit rather than fight, as the Clare/Tipp JFB team also called it a day. Seven teams remain in the New York Senior Hurling Championship: defending champions Connecticut State, Tipperary, Offaly, Waterford, Clare, NJ/Kilkenny, and Galway will have a go at it.

New York takes hit

The New York panel appear to have lost the service of wingback Cathal McKeever. The Derry man, who looked certain to be in the starting 15 versus Galway on Sunday, has been ruled out because of an illegal transfer.

Cup team honored

New York’s victorious 1980 Gael Linn Cup team will be honored at halftime of the New York Connacht Championship match. New York defeated Galway in that two match aggregate competition led by Frank McGuigan, Fran Ryder, and Kieran Whelan. New York Gaels will have the change to tip their hats to familiar faces like Pat Ryan, Paddy Gormely, Pat Carroll, Ollie Bracken, and Andy O’Grady.

Ladies in action

On Sunday May 15, LGAA will play in Gaelic Park after the Connaught Championship game for their inter-provincial trophy. Connaught/Ulster will defend their title and will be looking to win their fourth straight final. Munster/Leinster will be plotting their downfall, so a good game is promised.
