Oliver Kearney, ‘tireless campaigner,’ dies

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Kearney was credited, alongside Fr. Des Wilson of Belfast and Fr. Sean McManus in Washington, D.C., with spearheading the MacBride Principles, which asked U.S. corporations not to invest in companies in Northern Ireland unless they treated Catholics fairly.
Kearney made many tours across the U.S. and some of the American friends he made were represented at his funeral at Edendork outside Dungannon, where he’d been living for the last few years.
Kearney, who lived until recently in Antrim town, was actively involved in the civil rights movement of the late 1960s. He completed a degree late in life, writing his final thesis on the history of the SDLP.
