Ordinary people talk about peace

The noted documentary film "Out of the Ashes: Northern Ireland’s Fragile Peace" which takes a fresh look at the peace process from the perspective of ordinary people, will be featured on Wednesday, April 28, at 7 p.m. on Celtic Vision.

Though the film features interviews with some prominent personalities, such as Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams, "the primary focus is on newer voices," said the producer and director, John Michalczyk, a professor of fine arts at Boston College.

Michalczyk’s film premiered last year at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

"We listen to voices seldom heard before: the women who are forced to take up so much of the day-to-day work in family and community life; and the former prisoners, who have undergone a radical change from using violence to pursuing social action," Michalczyk said. "As the peace process goes on, these are the people who are truly fostering a long-term change."

"It’s a compelling show in that it’s so powerful and yet so even-handed," said Kathleen Held, vice president of programming at Celtic Vision. "If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to raise children and do your laundry in a country at war, it’s fascinating glimpse of that life."

Filmed on location in Derry, Belfast, and Dublin, the film features the work of musicians as Phil Coulter and Robbie O’Connell.
