Teikyo Post came back to defeat Nyack College, 77-58, as O’Reilly had an eagle eye for the basket, throwing down 5 of 8 from the floor, including his lone three-point try, and making all six free throws for 17 points. Again, he had 11 caroms. O’Leary was more productive here, scoring 9 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field and 1-for-2 from the line. He had 6 rebounds.
Teikyo (7-8) then outlasted Bloomfield College, 86-84, despite both O’Leary and O’Reilly fouling out. O’Reilly attempted only four shots from the floor, making one, while missing all four free throws. He had 2 points and 3 rebounds in 24 minutes. O’Leary managed 10 points in 17 minutes, on 4-for-7 shooting from the field and 2-for-4 from the stripe. He had 4 rebounds.
O’Reilly, with 7.6 points per game, and O’Leary, with 7.4 points, are second and third, respectively, on the team in scoring average, behind Ron Christy, who leads the team with 25.8 points per game.
Jon Larranaga led George Mason in scoring with 22 points in a 67-58 victory over William & Mary. The Oakton, Va., senior, who has played for the Irish national squad, went 7-for-18 from the floor, including 3-for-10 from long range, plus 5-for-8 from the foul line. He added 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 blocked shots. Mason is 9-8 overall and 5-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Michael Westbrooks contributed 10 points to Colby’s well-balanced scoring attack, although the Polar Bears lost to Trinity, Conn., 71-69. The Dublin freshman shot 5-for-11 from the floor. His 7 rebounds were a team high for the game. Colby is 4-9 overall and 0-2 in the New England Small College Athletic Association.
Simon Behan shot 2-for-3 from the field to add 4 points to Middlebury’s output in an 83-66 victory over Union, N.Y. The Dublin sophomore also had 4 rebounds for the 10-4 Panthers.
Davidson split a pair of Southern Conference tussles last week, losing to Virginia Military, 61-60, before bouncing back with an 83-72 win over UNC-Greensboro. Forward Conor Grace nearly had a double-double in the VMI loss. He put 12 points on the board, notching 5 of 11 shots from the floor, including 2 of 4 three-pointers, and reeled in 9 rebounds. The Dubliner’s numbers in the Greensboro win read 9 points (2-for-6 from the floor, including 1-for-3 from downtown, and 4-for-6 from the foul line) and 6 rebounds. The Wildcats sport a 10-6 mark, including 4-2 against SoCon rivals.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Quinnipiac’s Kim Fitzpatrick chipped in 9 points in the Bobcats’ 79-78 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. The Waterford sophomore launched all three field goal attempts from outside the three-point perimeter and connected on two of them. She also shot 3-for-4 from the foul line. Fitzpatrick also handed out 5 assists as Quinnipiac improved to 9-6 overall and 5-1 in the Northeast Conference.
Manhattan is on a six-game winning spree. Last week’s victims were Fairfield, 68-43, and Loyola, Md., 62-44. Siobhan Kilkenny emphasized different aspects of the game in each outing. Against Fairfield, the Castlebar, Co. Mayo, senior scored 13 points, hitting 5 of 13 field goal attempts (1 of 3 from long distance). She also had 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks. Kilkenny’s shooting eye was slightly off in the Loyola game, in which she made only 3 of 15 field goal attempts for 6 points. But she managed 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals. Kilkenny is second on the squad in both scoring with 10.8 points per game and rebounding (5.8 boards per game). She leads the team in both assists and steals. The Lady Jaspers are 9-8 overall and 6-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Sacred Heart’s Kate Maher muscled her way to 10 rebounds as the Pioneers (9-5, 3-2 Northeast Conference) throttled Robert Morris, 68-54. Maher, a junior from Waterford, added 4 points, shooting 2-for-7 from the field.
Same old, same old for Iona (1-14). The score was Dartmouth 87, Gaels 60. Michelle Fahy, once again, led Iona in scoring with 18 points (7-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the line) and rebounding with 9 boards. Her 4 assists were co-high for the team. Fahy is a junior from Galway.
SWIMMING
Andrew Bree enjoyed victory in both an individual heat and a relay as Tennessee defeated Virginia, 126-117. Bree, a junior from Helens Bay, Co. Down, finished first in the men’s 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:02.13. His splits were 27.78, 31.12, 31.39 and 31.84. He also swam the second leg in the 400-yard medley relay, which the Vols won in 3:19.97. Bree also finished third in the 200-yard intermediate medley with a time of 1:52.41, against the winner’s 1:49.79.
Cleveland State downed Duquesne, 129-67, with Dublin juniors Niall McGrane Aidan McLaughlin racking up points in several events. McGrane was third into the pool in the Vikings’ winning effort in the 400-yard medley relay, which they swam in 3:33. McLaughlin led off for the “B” team in the same race, and they placed second in 3:46. Individually, McLaughlin was second in the 200-yard freestyle, timed in 1:47 (against the winner’s 1:46 clocking) and third in the 200-yard backstroke, clocked in 2:00 (1:54 for the winner). McGrane’s best showing was a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly, which he swam in 1:59 (1:58 for the winner). He also came in fourth in the 200-yard intermediate medley in 2:05 (2:01 for the winner).
Cleveland was less fortunate matching strokes against Eastern Michigan, losing 122-102. McLaughlin anchored the Vikings’ victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team, which finished the event in 3:13.17. He also came in fifth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.42 (against 1:44.01 for the winner). McGrane had a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly, which he completed in 1:58.66 (versus 1:54.21 for the winner), and a fifth-place effort in the 200-yard intermediate medley, in which he required 2:01.28 (1:55.75 for the winner).
