Orla’s Diary: Threading together spring fashion

February 17, 2011

For those of you unfamiliar with the term, threading is a form of hair removal and just so happens to be my favorite method of eyebrow grooming.
I was never one for waxing, and while I love the lasting effects of laser hair removal on my legs and underarms, the thoughts of removing my stray eyebrows through laser leaves me with the fear of loosing my sight as well as the strays. Occasionally I do pluck, but in emergencies only.
Threading is truly the way to go — quick and painless, with amazing results. I compare it to vacuuming, which I’ve heard is another great way to clean up a mess!
While lots of nail salons offer threading, I prefer to go to the experts when I’m doing anything to my face. So when Sadia, a friend of mine, opened a salon specifically for threading, I was thrilled.
All told, it was five minutes out of my day and eight dollars out of my wallet. It’s a pretty swift operation all in all, except when I opt for a massage as well, which adds at least another half hour. The soothing atmosphere in the salon also has a way of making me forget everything on my “to do” list for the day.
With my newly-groomed brows, I took myself up to Bergdorf Goodman’s to check out the sales. More of a look-see than a shopping spree, I told myself.
Tory Burch has become one of my favorite labels this past couple of seasons. She likes to provide an original look for the style conscious woman who is aware of the trends but does not rely on them. Hers is a style outlook similar to my own, I like to think — neither slave to, nor victim, of fashion.
Needless to say, I went in to see what the sale was like, but my radar was drawing me towards all the new and fresh clothing on the rails. Resort mixed with the early pieces of Spring/Summer. Embellishment is continuing through into spring, but this time it’s gorgeous colorful embroidery and beading on beautiful silk tunics and delicate little tops. Thank goodness pilates classes start next week!
It’s so exciting to eye up all the things that I want to wear this spring. One thing I definitely have my eye on is the metallic Gigi hobo bag. Distressed metallic leather accessories are still a big look for spring, but not in the bohemian chic they have been for the past few seasons. This season, it’s more like adding the unexpected to classic pieces.
I’m thinking of the silk tunic and the metallic bag with a pair of white tailored capri pants by Michael Kors. So even if I don’t get to Saint-Tropez this spring, at least I’ll look like I’m just back!
