Parades The Irish on the march

Gearing up for the big day, cities, villages and towns all over the nation are slapping on the green paint, sashes and hats, warming up the pipes and hitting the streets for their own celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

If you can’t make it to the greatest of them all on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, here are a few other parades where you can test your Irishness against the best of them:

New York

Throggs Neck

The annual Throggs Neck St Patrick’s Day parade will kick off on March 12 at noon. Assembly at the corner of East Tremont and Lafayette Avenues in the Bronx. Ends on the corner of Harding and Balcolm Avenues. Details, (718) 792-2833.

Greenville St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on March 18 starting at 12:30 p.m. from St. John’s Parking Lot, Rte. 81. Grand marshal is Mike Hynes. Details, (518) 966-8543.

Mid Hudson

The Mid Hudson St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place in Middletown on Sunday, March 12, starting at 2 p.m. Grand marshal is Seamus Comiskey. Mass at 9:30 a.m. at the Carmelite Center. Details, (914) 562-4289.

Brooklyn Celts

The Celts, the parade marchers of Irish descent from the Kings County Supreme Court, will hold their annual parade in Brooklyn Heights on Friday, March 10, at 1 p.m. Assemble at St. Charles Borromeo Church on Sydney Place, march up Montague Street concluding at the Supreme Court, 360 Adams St., Brooklyn. Sleepy Hollow

The annual Sleepy Hollow St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Sunday, March 12, from 1:30 p.m. on Main Street in Tarrytown, to Rte. 9, to Beekman Avenue in Sleepy Hollow. Details, (914) 366-4291.

Bay Ridge

The Brooklyn Irish American Parade Committee will hold its annual parade on March 19 in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Assembly point at 15th Street and Prospect Park West at noon. The parade is dedicated to the memory of NYPD Chief Patrick Brennan. Details, (718) 499-9482.

White Plains

The third annual White Plains St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on Saturday, March 11, at 11:30 a.m. on the downtown area. Details, (914) 686-5600.

Putnam County

The annual Putnam County parade will be held on Sunday, March 12, at 2:30 p.m., starting at the junction of Mt. Hope Road and East Lake Boulevard and Rte. 6, Mahopac. Heads East on Rte. 6 Lake Plaza to the K-Mart Shopping Center. Details, (914) 225-9509.

Rockville Centre

The annual Rockville Centre St. Patrick’s Day parade will take place on Saturday, March 25, at noon.

South Street Stroll

The first annual South Street Seaport Irish Stroll will take place on Friday, March 17, at 1 p.m. Entrance fee is $8 and two cans of food and entitles the entrant to a cup and a map of 12 bars and restaurants with drink specials in each one. Food goes to local food bank. Details, 1 (800) 42-CRAWL.

Bayport-Blue Point

The Bayport Blue Point Chamber of Commerce presents its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 12, at 11:30 a.m. on Montauk Highway between Snedecor Avenue, in Bayport, and Blue Point Avenue, in Blue Point, south on Blue Point Avenue to the elementary school. Details, (631) 363-0154.

New Jersey

Ocean County

March 11 will mark the Ocean County St. Patrick’s Day parade at 12 noon on the boulevard in Seaside Heights. Details, (732) 830-1847.

Bergen County

The Bergen County parade will be held on Sunday, March 12, at 2 p.m. in Bergenfield. Runs the length of Washington Avenue. Details, Frank Holt at (201) 573-0595.

Morristown

The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Morristown will kick off on March 11 from noon at the Morristown Municipal Building, South Street. Details, (973) 267-1455.

Newark

The annual Newwark St. Patrick’s Day parade will be held Sunday, March 19. Joseph J. Bradley is the grand marshal.

West Orange

Pennsylvania

Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s 49th annual parade will kick off on March 12 at 1 p.m. at Market Street in the Old City. Heads west to City Hall to JFK Boulevard, north on 16th Street to the Parkway to Logan Circle. Details, (215) 945-5231.

Poconos

The Pocono Irish American Club will present its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 19, stepping off from Stroudsburg High School and ending at the Municipal Building in East Stroudsburg. Heads down lower Main turning onto McConnell and over the Interborough Bridge down Washington Street. Details, (570) 476-6046.

Harrisburg

The annual Harrisburg march will kick off on Saturday, March 18, at 11 a.m. from City Island in Downtown Harrisburg. March goes to Second Street to North Street, to Front Street and back to City Island. Details, (717) 367-2410.

Norristown

The Norristown St. Patrick’s Day parade kicks off on Saturday, March 18, at 2 p.m. at West Marshall and Buttonwood Streets, with reviewing stands at Main and Swede Streets. Details, (610) 277-1366.

North Wildwood

North Wildwood’s fifth annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place March 18 at noon at 9th and Atlantic Avenues. Details, (609) 522-2299.

Connecticut

Stamford

The Stamford St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee will hold its parade on March 11 from noon in the downtown Stamford area. Jack Condlin is grand marshal. Marching units should contact (203) 461-9218 and businesses should call (203) 869-7673.

New Haven

The New Haven annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Sunday, March 12, at 1:30 p.m. at Chapel and Norton Streets, with more than 130 marching units. Details, (203) 272-0118.

Greenwich

The Wild Geese present the Greenwich St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 12, at 2 p.m. Assemble at the Island Beach Parking Lot at 1:30. March will head north along Mason Street, turn on Putnam Avenue, and proceed South on Greenwich Avenue. Details, (203) 531-5547.

Milford

Meridan

Meridan’s march, on Saturday, March 18, at 2 p.m., starts on Parker Avenue, goes along Main Street and ends on Bradley Avenue. Details, (203) 237-6573.

Massachusetts

Boston

The South Boston parade will take place on March 19 and starts at 11 a.m.

Worcester

The parade in Worcester will take place this Sunday, March 12.

Newport, R.I.

The parade in Newport will take place this Saturday, March 12.

Chicago

Downtown

The 14th annual St Patrick’s Day Parade will take place on March 11 at noon with Vice President Al Gore leading as grand marshal. The parade will head from Wacker Drive South to Dearborn Street, parallel to the Chicago River, which will be colored green. Also, four Irish Congressional Medal of Honor winners will participate. Southside

On March 12, the Southside St. Patrick’s Parade will start at noon. The parade starts at 103rd Street and Western and heads to 115th Street. A breakfast and Mass will precede the march. Details, (708) 687-9188.

San Francisco

The St. Patrick’s parade in San Francisco takes place on this Sunday, March 12, at 12:45 p.m. The route is along Market Street to City Hall.

Baltimore

Newly elected mayor Martin J. O’Malley has been nominated grand marshal for the annual Baltimore St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which will be held Sunday, March 19, at 2 p.m. at the Washington Moment on Charles Street, heading East on Pratt Street. Details, (410) 747-3575.

Texas

Corpus Christi

The Irish Cultural Association of Corpus Christi will hold its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 11, at 9:30 a.m. The parade will run along Ocean Drive and finish at the Ward-McCampbell Irish Cultural Association Building. Details, Mary Whitmore at (361) 991-1690.

San Antonio

Washington, D.C.

Derry-born actress Roma Downey will lead the March 12 Washington, D.C., St. Patrick’s Day parade when it steps off at noon and marches down Constitution Avenue, NW, from 7th to 17th streets. More than 100 marching units. Details, (301) 858-5321.

Wisconsin

The Shamrock Club of Wisconsin will hold its annual parade party on March 11 at 1 p.m. at the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center, 2133 West Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee. Admission $3 and $6 for adults. Details, (262) 782-0908.

Arkansas

The Irish Cultural Society of Arkansas will present Little Rock’s first St. Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday, March 11, at 3 p.m., starting on Capitol Avenue and Ferry Street and ending at the Farmer’s Market. Details, (501) 661-4610.

Kentucky

The Clonoe Independent Pipe Band from County Tyrone will march in the Louisville’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 11.

Michigan

The annual wearing of the Green traditional parade by Fenian’s Irish Pub, Conklin, 19683 Main St., will take place on March 17 with line-up starting at the north end of Main Street at 10:45 a.m.. The march starts of 10:55 a.m.

Florida

A St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Melbourne will be held on March 18 in downtown Melbourne. Businesses and groups interested in participating should call Bill Barr at (321) 723-6783 before March 15.

Ohio

Akron

The AOH will present its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Arkon on March 11 at 12:30 p.m. Starts at the Kenmore High School parking lot on Battles Avenue, heading down 13th Street to Kenmore Boulevard, to 18th Street and Battles Avenue. Details, (330) 836-0775.

Cincinnati

Cincinnati’s St. Patrick’s parade will be held Sunday, March 12.

Cleveland

The Cleveland annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will kick off on March 17 at 12:30 p.m. with marshaling on Euclid Avenue, between East 18 and East 24th Streets, proceeding along west Euclid to East Roadway of Public Square, north on East Roadway to Superior to Rockwell Avenue.
