The City of Brotherly Love wants to see a brotherly reunion on the island based on the relevant provisions in the Good Friday Agreement.
A resolution calling for unity was drawn up by Philadelphia City Councilman-at-Large, James Kenney. The resolution was cosponsored by all 17 Philadelphia Council members and unanimously adopted on Dec. 10.
“The Philadelphia area Ancient Order of Hibernians worked with Kenney on the resolution and supported its passage with their presence at the Council Session,” Kenney’s office said in a statement.
“As we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the upcoming 20th anniversary of the end of Apartheid, we recognize that certain provisions of the Good Friday Agreement are past due,” Kenney said.
“It is time for the Irish and English Governments to take immediate steps necessary to bring to fullness the promises of the Good Friday Agreement,” he added.
The resolution contained a historical explanation of partition and stated that the Good Friday Agreement included provisions for achieving a united Ireland “through purely democratic and peaceful means,” as well as providing for the development of North/South institutions and cross-border cooperation.
