Philadelphia’s police commissioner, John Timoney, is leaving the City of Brotherly Love and heading up the turnpike to New York again.

Timoney has accepted a position with Beau Dietl & Associates, the Manhattan-based private investigations company headed by former cop-turned-private-detective Beau Dietl.

Dietl told the Echo Tuesday that he was “very thrilled” that Timoney was coming to work with his firm.

“If I had a choice of any former law enforcement official it would be John,” Dietl, who once ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Congress, said. “I am pleased and honored that John has accepted.”

Timoney has been police commissioner in Philadelphia the last four years. He has been widely praised for his hands-on approach to policing.

During his last stint in New York, Timoney, who was born in the Liberties area of inner-city Dublin, served as deputy commissioner under police chief William Bratton.

Timoney has been linked to the top cop job in New York ever since he left the city, but the next commissioner is to be former NYPD chief Ray Kelly.

Still, Timoney’s return to New York is certain to fire up speculation that he could be the man on the spot to succeed Kelly a few years from now.

What exactly Timoney’s role at Beau Dietl & Associates will be is as yet unclear.

The company, which has as its motto “much more than one tough cop,” frequently hires former police officers for its work, which, according to its website, covers “a complete range of investigative and security services to its business and individual clients worldwide.”

These services range from corporate and due-diligence investigations to litigation support for class-action suits, civil and criminal proceedings and the providing of “armed security personnel.”

While based in New York, the company also has offices in Europe and Asia.
