President Clinton came face to face with himself in Ballybunion last weekend when he stopped there briefly after a four-and-a-half-hour golf game on the famous local links.

Running an hour behind schedule, his motorcade stopped briefly in the seaside town and he got out to inspect the plaster replica statue that is due to be replaced with a permanent bronze memorial later in the year.

The president walked towards the 7-foot-6 statue of himself in golfing pose on a granite base, raised his arms in the air, clapped his hands and burst out laughing.
