DUBLIN — The release of six IRA prisoners from Portlaoise Prison, including the Provisionals’ jail commander, has been strongly criticized by Unionists opposed to the Good Friday peace deal.

The continuing punishment beatings and the linking of the IRA to the death of a Belfast man who bled to death after being kneecapped last months has led to concern that paramilitaries are not honoring the cease-fires.
