Republic cracks down on illegal immigration

New laws on carriers’ liability were brought into effect last Friday by Justice Minister Michael McDowell.
“Inadequate document checks by carriers result in illegal immigrants arriving in Ireland,” a Justice spokesman said. “Inadequate checks also pose a potentially serious threat to the security of the State.”
The changes in the immigration laws are aimed at ensuring that people whose documents are not in order are not allowed onto “aircraft, ships or other vehicles” bound for Ireland.
McDowell said there has been wide consultation with carriers and police are assisting them in ensuring compliance. The change will mean fines of up to
