Rev. Kevin M. Bray, Benedictine monk

The Rev. Kevin M. Bray, 76, of St. Mary’s Abbey in Morris Township, a Benedictine monk, died April 14, in the Holy Family Home in Philadelphia.

A Mass was offered on Monday, April 17 in St. Mary’s Abbey in Morris Township.

Born in Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan, Father Kevin professed his vows on July 11, 1945, and was ordained to the priesthood on March 10, 1951.

He received a bachelors degree from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., in 1947 and a master’s degree in education from Seton Hall University in South Orange in 1958. He studied biology at Marquette University in Milwaukee from 1952 through 1953.

Father Kevin taught biology at the Delbarton School in Morristown for many years, and was a parochial vicar at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in Linden, Sacred Heart in Elizabeth and Notre Dame of Mount Carmel in Cedar Knolls.

He also was pastor at Blessed Sacrament Church in Elizabeth and a chaplain at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in East Orange.

Father Kevin spent years as a missionary in Brazil.

Following a debilitating stroke, his last years were spent at Holy Family Home in Philadelphia under the care of the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Sheila McDonald and Sister Patricia Bray.
