Rocks put away Wanderers

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

The 4-0 scoreline flatters Wanderers, who were never really able to keep pace. They could though, have scored twice early on but for the agility of Kevin McPartland in the home goal.

The Rocks took the lead after 15 minutes when Johann Lannon blasted a left foot rocket past a helpless Wanderers ‘keeper. Ten minutes later, Darren Thunder controlled a Lannon cross and fired home a second and it was plain sailing thereafter.

Lannon took a quick free from Billy Henderson and struck a second unstoppable shot into the roof of the net to leave it 3-0 at the break. Tim Cummins probably couldn’t believe the time afforded him in his quest for goal midway through the second half. But when Cummins finally scrambled the ball home, the scoring was complete and the Rocks were through to the next round.

They had two great chances to score before we took the lead, but our goalie saved them," Shamrock player-coach John Guildea said.

Shamrock have to wait for Third Division Barnstonworth Rovers and Ripensia-Romania "A" tie to be replayed — the two sides produced a goalless tie at the weekend — before knowing their quarterfinal opponents.
