Rocks wither in Gael-force storm

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Astoria Gaels continued on their winning way in the Cosmo League last Sunday with a convincing 4-1 victory over their neighbors the Shamrocks Thirds.

Both teams started with intriguing passing combinations. On the 10-minute mark, Kevin Nagle connected on a good cross by Vivian White to put the Gaels in the lead. The Shamrocks responded with a strong run of possession for 10 minutes, which resulted in the equalizing goal.

By the stroke of the half, the Cavan duo of Vivian White and Martin O’Reilly put the Gaels back on top with an incisive 1-2 combination that finished with O’Reilly firing home from 12 yards.

Ten minutes into the second half, a free kick by Man of the Match Brendan Donaghue put Derek McKenna through for this seventh of the season on his seventh game of the season.

Astoria then dominated the remainder of the game. A strong run from the wing by Nester Allen produced a penalty when he was taken down in the box where Brendan Donaghue calmly converted.

Others who played well for the Gaels were Lloyd Ganning, Joe Harris, Kevin Nagle and Gerrie O’Brien.
