Athletic Bonventura 1, Rovers 0

Rovers failed in their attempt to win a third straight State Cup title last weekend in a loss to Athletic Bonventura that could have gone either way.

Declan Conron hit the bar in the first half and Stuart Duffin had a long-range shot well saved, but at halftime the game was tied.

In the second half, the Colombians played better and scored with 10 minutes to go via a deflected shot that gave keeper Dave Ballantyne no chance. Rovers coach Mark Hopper was gracious in defeat and vowed to win the Cup next year.

Islip 2, Rovers Reserves 1

Rovers Reserves were favored in their State Cup final but Islip dominated the first hour of this match, with veteran John Carty racing through to score after 10 minutes.

Islip doubled their advantage just before halftime when Carty was quickest to react and fired the loose ball home.

Rovers finally woke up and battled harder for the ball, reducing the deficit when Andy Hill shot home, but the last chance fell to Conal Fadden and he somehow missed from a yard. Willie Dempsey praised Islip for their deserved victory.
