Rovers play to another scoreless draw

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

The Rovers’ first team recorded its second 0-0 tie of the season in front of a large crowd on Sunday. If the woodwork registered goals, then it would have been a landslide as Stuart Duffin, Chris Simms and Damien Dunleavy all connected with them. A great display in defense by Rusty McGowan and Paul McGlynn kept Istria at bay and the Rovers have yet to concede a goal this season, although they have yet to score one.

In the game of the day, the Reserves showed great character in winning a tough battle 4-3. Goals by Derek Quinlan, Nial Cooy and Anton Diver (2) secured the three points for the boys. In goal, despite giving up three, Dean Gibbs performed heroically to prevent a tie when he saved a last-minute penalty. Coach Ray Quinlan’s use of some young legs proved to be the difference in this one.

In the final game of the day, the Over 30s had a lackluster performance resulting in a 1-1 tie. A hard-fought midfield battle was the norm in this game as both teams struggled to find form. The only highlight came with a spectacular free kick by Nigel Cunniffe to level the scores. Best for the Rovers were Liam Flanagan and Brian Bain in a game coach McGreevey would rather forget.
