Rovers roll toward 1st title

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

Rovers 5, East Meadow 1

The Irish Rovers moved a step closer to their first-ever league title by routing a depleted East Meadow side. In-form Kevin Daly led the way with two first-half blasts, and before they knew what hit them, Tony O’Donnell finished clinically to ensure the points.

East Meadow pulled one back just after the hour, but Rovers finished strong and a Damian Dunleavy penalty was followed by Stuart Duffin netting his ninth of the campaign. Rovers are level on points with arch rivals Glen Cove, with the top two meeting on Sunday in what could prove to be a title decider.

E. Meadow Reserves 5 Rovers 1

Rovers Reserves have collapsed in the last few weeks, but it could all have been different if Niall Coogan hadn’t missed a gilt-edged chance early on. A Kevin Kenny penalty tied the score at one each, but Rovers ran out of steam, perhaps too many pints of Guinness on a Saturday night said coach Brian Monahan.

The old veterans still have it, as they ran all over East Meadow. Coach Joe McGreevy gave himself a rare start and he controlled the midfield, setting up Dave Quigley for two easy finishes. Peter Hallinan then went on a Maradona-like run to score the goal of the season, and Marshall McAdoo headed home after good work from Gerry Coyle. McGreevy added the fifth with an overhead kick, to cap a fine performance.
