Ryanair still mulling U.S.

February 17, 2011

The Irish Examiner reported that the airline was not viewing U.S. routes as a priority even as talks continued. Nevertheless, the arrival of full U.S. pre-clearance services at Shannon Airport, and the anticipated extension of same to Dublin next year, will make Ryanair’s plans to fly to smaller U.S. airports a good deal more feasible – this because inbound passengers will have already cleared both U.S. customs and immigration checks before departing Ireland.
Meanwhile, in line with its plans to trim long-haul services, Aer Lingus is moving to reduce its fleet of larger Airbus aircraft, this by returning two leased planes earlier than scheduled, and by delaying the delivery on newer aircraft.
The most immediate effect will that the carrier’s fleet of long-haul Airbus A330s will be reduced from nine to eight by the end of this year.
The number will drop to seven by March of next year, but will quickly rise to eight again when Aer Lingus takes delivery in April of a new A330-300.
The airline recently announced cuts in services from the U.S. to Ireland that will take effect during the coming winter months.
