McGuinness, who’s in Boston for several speaking and fund-raising engagements, met the senator after a Harvard University event.
He later told journalists that he brought Kerry up to date on the peace process and on Sinn Fein’s positions over the current deadlock on the review of the Good Friday agreement.
McGuinness, his party’s vice president, said he thanked Kerry for the nominee’s strong endorsement of a more pro-active commitment by the U.S. on the peace process.
Last month, Kerry’s campaign criticized President Bush’s handling of the U.S. role in the peace process.
“President Bush has failed to recognize the importance of building on the work of President Clinton in facilitating the peace process,” read part of statement issued by the Kerry campaign.
The president is likely to get his overview of the peace process from Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and others today.
