The Shamrock soccer club will play New York Athletic Club as the Cosmopolitan League and Cup winners vie for the Charity Shield.
The game will be played at Giants Stadium on Sept. 22, immediately after the Metro Stars-San Jose clash. It’s seen as a red letter day for both clubs and for the players a chance to perform at the same venue where Ray Houghton’s goal beat the Italians in the ’94 World Cup. Buses will be made available for those wishing to travel to the game. For more details, call (718) 784-9384.
The Shamrocks, meanwhile, were entertained by Joe Behan’s New York University, in their first pre-season friendly. A John Walsh goal rescued a draw for the reserves, but the still ebullient first team were too strong for the college kids, and goals from Austin Welsh, Ray Elsesser, John Guildea and Shane Martin gave the Rocks a 4-1 victory.
The ever-popular Sunnyside Gardens fun day and five-a-side takes place on Sunday next, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m. Kids races, tug-of-war, barbecue, the lot, everybody welcome. The above number again for details.
