Shevlin gets another term as Shamrock president

February 16, 2011

By Staff Reporter

The 69-year-old Shevlin will lead an executive comprising new vice president Kevin McPartland, secretary John Moore, treasurer John Guildea, social secretary Ronan Creaney and directors Eltin Colman, Dermot Clarke and Eugene Smyth.
McPartland was elected VP after Colman vacated the position to become a director. Moore and Guildea were also handed coaching responsibilities.
The latter will take charge of the Over-30s, while Moore will be a co-manager of the reserves, alongside Sean Keogh.
However, the first-team coaching position remains vacant after interim coach Paul Wilson saw the club through the end of the season. Wilson took over following the departure of Billy Henderson during the winter break.
Guildea said a new coach would be appointed in due course, adding that Shamrock were looking forward to the start of the new season.
“New players are welcome, particularly good Over-30 players,” he said. Call (718) 416-1826 for more information.
Runners-up in the First Division the previous year, Shamrock finished last season third out of six teams in Div. One (West) of the restructured CSL top flight. The club completed its 16-match schedule with four wins, eight losses and four ties (16 points). New York Albanians, who topped the West, finished (12-3-1, 37).
The Shamrock reserves finished bottom in their category with a 3-10-3 (12) record, as did the Shamrock thirds (3-10-3, 12), whose last place finish in Metro Div. I saw them relegated to Metro Div. II next season.
In Over-30 action, Shamrock’s veterans won five and lost 10 of their 15 games (with one fixture still pending) which was good enough for a middle-of-the-table finish (15) in their six club section.

SOCCER RESORT TOURNEY
Shamrock and the rest of the Cosmopolitan League’s Irish contingent will warm up for the forthcoming season by participating in Soccer Resort’s First Annual New York Classic on Staten Island on Aug. 1.
The Rocks, First Division promotion side Lansdowne Bhoys, and Second Division newcomers Astoria Gaels, as well as non-CSL Irish clubs New Jersey Celtic, Beadling and The Cottage will be among some 20 entrants in the day-long eight-a-side tournament organized by ex-Shamrock star Niall Swann.
They will be playing for a $1,000 Soccer Resort travel credit to the Las Vegas tournament Aug. 26-29, which marks the end of the season for the competitions Swann, the founder and president of Soccer Resorts, organizes in North America.
“It promises to be an exciting fiesta of soccer,” Swann said. “Participants will be guaranteed four games against national opposition with each game 40 minutes long.
Categories in the tournament are men’s (Open, B Division, Over-30 and masters), women (two divisions), and co-ed (one division).
Although a New York resident, this is the first time Swann is hosting a Soccer Resort event in the Big Apple.
Regular venues include Washington, D.C.; Boston, Montreal, Miami, and Las Vegas.
